- What can hurt someone here? Falling objects, flying debris, sharp edges, chemicals, noise, dust, live circuits, vehicle traffic.
- What PPE protects against it? Hard hats, safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, safety-toe boots, hearing protection, respirators, hi-vis.
- Who certifies it? A named person signs and dates a written certification that the assessment was done.

How to Do a PPE Hazard Assessment in 6 Steps
Step 1: Walk the work area
Do the assessment where the work actually happens — not from the trailer. Walk the site and look at each task being performed. On a construction site, conditions change weekly, so assess by area and by task: concrete pour, steel erection, demo, trenching, finishing.
Step 2: Identify hazards by category
Work through the hazard categories systematically so nothing gets missed:
- Impact — falling objects, flying particles, struck-by from vehicles or equipment
- Penetration — sharp objects underfoot or overhead, rebar, nails, sheet metal
- Compression — pinch points, roll-over, heavy loads
- Chemical — concrete, epoxies, solvents, fuels, silica dust
- Heat/cold — welding, torch work, weather exposure
- Dust and respiratory — cutting concrete or masonry, sanding, confined spaces
- Light radiation — welding arc, laser levels
- Noise — saws, generators, impact tools (rule of thumb: if you have to raise your voice at arm's length, it's loud enough to matter)
- Electrical — live circuits, temporary power, overhead lines
- Falls — any work at 6 feet or more
