Rates are per 100 full-time workers per year (the OSHA 200,000-hour formula). Many GCs and owners screen subs at TRIR 3.0 — and some at the industry average — so every tenth of a point matters on prequalification forms.

Benchmark figures are approximate BLS incidence rates for construction (NAICS 23); your trade's average may differ. For official reporting, use your OSHA 300A totals and actual payroll hours.

How TRIR is calculated

TRIR = (recordable incidents × 200,000) ÷ total hours worked. The 200,000 is 100 full-time workers × 2,000 hours each, so the result reads as “recordables per 100 workers per year” no matter how big your company is. DART uses the same formula but counts only the serious subset — cases with days away, restricted duty, or job transfer. Both come straight off your OSHA 300 log, which is why keeping that log accurate matters twice.

Why the number decides which bids you win

TRIR is the safety credit score of construction. GCs and owners screen subcontractors on it during prequalification — a common cutoff is 3.0, and safety-driven owners screen at the industry average or better. It also feeds your workers' comp experience mod: a high TRIR means higher premiums for the next three years, and a single serious recordable at a 25-person company moves the rate by nearly half a point. That's the real math behind prevention — each recordable you avoid protects both the six-figure true cost of the injury and your seat at the bid table.
