Contact with overhead power lines is a leading cause of jobsite electrocutions.

The power line at the edge of this site has killed more construction workers than almost any other single hazard type. Ladders, dump beds, boom lifts, crane cables, even tape measures — the line doesn't care what touched it, and it doesn't always take direct contact: high voltage can arc.

Why it matters

Overhead lines are the hazard everyone stops seeing after day two. But the machine operator watching the load, the roofer carrying a ladder vertical, the dump driver raising a bed — each is one glance away from contact, and the electricity path down is through whoever's touching the equipment.

Key points — cover all of these

  1. Know where every line is before work starts — walk the site, look up, and mark line locations in the plan and on the ground.
  2. Keep at least 10 feet of clearance from lines up to 50kV — more for higher voltage, and 20 feet for cranes unless the utility confirms the voltage.
  3. Treat every line as energized. Sagging, insulated-looking, or 'probably telecom' means nothing until the utility says so.
  4. Use a dedicated spotter whenever equipment operates near lines — the operator cannot judge clearance from the seat.
  5. Carry ladders horizontal, lower dump beds before moving, and plan boom paths away from lines entirely where possible.
  6. If your machine contacts a line: stay on it, warn others away, and have someone call the utility. Only jump clear (feet together, shuffle away) if fire forces you off.

The answers are the point — this is where today's real hazards surface.

  • Where are the overhead lines on and around this site — can everyone point to them right now?
  • Which of today's equipment can physically reach a line — lifts, cranes, dump beds, ladders?
  • Does everyone know the stay-on-the-machine rule if contact happens — and why jumping usually kills?
