Every piece of PPE on your body is the last line of defense — it only matters after everything else has already failed. The hard hat only works on the day something falls. The glasses only work at the exact second the grinder throws a spark. And that's the day you don't get to choose.

Why it matters

PPE fails in boring ways: glasses on the forehead, hard hat in the truck, gloves in the back pocket, vest unzipped and flapping. Nobody skips PPE on the day they expect to be hurt — which is exactly the point: you don't get a memo.

Key points — cover all of these

1. Hard hat on in all work zones — worn forward, snug, no baseball cap underneath. Cracked, gouged, or sun-bleached shells get replaced; after any real impact, replace it, period.
2. Eye protection is an all-day item, not a task item — half of eye injuries happen to bystanders near the cutting, chipping, and nailing.
3. Hi-vis worn and zipped wherever vehicles and equipment operate — a vest on the seat protects the seat.
4. Safety-toe boots, laced, in good condition — worn-smooth soles on steel and mud are a slip hazard by themselves.
5. Task-specific gear when the task calls for it: face shield over glasses for grinding, hearing protection in loud zones, the right gloves per task.
6. PPE that doesn't fit doesn't protect — say so and get it swapped. Squinting through scratched lenses isn't toughness, it's a hazard.
